Design and Transformational Government talk

Here’s a webcast of William’s talk for OII/POST about how design can fix Transformational Government.

  1. Fantastic session William. Up to that point I had been thinking the day had been ‘truly worrying’ rather than ‘truly transformational. So thanks go to yourself and Tom Steinberg for saving the day.

See my take on things at:

  2. I listened to the whole discussion and found it interesting, however I got the impression that it was very much preaching to the choir!  Were there any figures present that would listen to (and be persuaded by) the messages?

  3. That’s a fair point and I’m afraid the answer seems to be no. You’d hope there would be some MPs at a POST gig in the Commons, and HMG’s CIO was there for a bit, but not my bit. There’s a sense in which officials who are tasked with getting on with something just don’t want to listen to something which questions the basis on which they’ve been asked to proceed. It makes them uncomfortable, they feel it’s almost disloyal to their political bosses.  I dont agree with that iew, but I’ve definitely encountered it.

Of course we outside government are in the happy position of being able to think freely and say whatever we think is right, which is a great relief and very good for our mental health.

  4. I haven’t heard from any people who disagreed with what I said. The demographics of the gig prbably meant I was preaching to the converted. Still, I had some delightful feedback and can’t resist quoting one correspondent, D:

I find myself incapable of replying to you without first delivering some gushing and over-the-top praise for your presentation at the event. I found it to be truly inspirational. I was left filled with a quite un-British level of enthusiasm and hope, and definite fissures appearing in my façade of weary cynicism. Thankfully, some of the other presentations balanced yours out -otherwise I might not have known what to do with myself.

Hurrah for the Wibbies. With friends like like you can face anyone I reckon.

Ideal Government

Let's say what we want from e-enabled government. Let's observe government first-hand. Let's say "Wouldn't It Be Better If" (WIBBI). Become an ethnographer of bureaucracy today! It beats getting frustrated with public services.
