From Kable’s GC News:
The Home Office will wait until 2011 to issue the ‘vast majority’ of identity cards to students and young people
The schedule is outlined in A Strong New Force at the Border, a document issued by the department on 19 August detailing plans for the UK Border Agency. It places the work in 2011 as part of a timeline, in contrast to earlier suggestions that it would happen a year earlier. The National Identity Scheme Delivery Plan, issued by the Home Office in March, said: “We will offer identity cards to young people in 2010 to assist them in proving their identity as they, for example, open their first bank account, take out a student loan or start employment.”
A Home Office spokesperson said that, while identity cards will be issued to students and young people in 2010, “it will be at a very low volume,” adding that the Border Agency document put the work in 2011 as this is when “the vast majority” of such cards will be issued.
I feel a bit constrained from robust comment on this, but I’d be very interested to hear if you know of a young person who feels in any way disadvantaged or disappointed by this delay.
