Maigret often asked colleagues to monitor his phone calls, especially when dealing with difficult political bosses: Why the recent huge media fuss over personal, private recordings? Why are our “Masters” so touchy when held to account?

We live in strange times: Issues and events which outrage many people seem to go virtually unreported; whereas others get blanket coverage, drawing instant “sound bites” from busy ministers.

We struggle with a world where behaviours and beliefs which so recently were taboo or illegal, now suddenly seem compulsory.

What are the acceptable limits for using modern video and audio surveillance and recording devices?

Laws now require many organisations to record and archive all internal and external communications, for future use by courts or “regulators;” to the extent that some staff favour holding meeting in coffee shops so as to avoid recorders.

The UK, and especially London have the highest number of CCTV cameras: Over four million CCTV cameras in London alone.

“The Authorities” encourage us to spy on our neighbours; to report them especially if we suspect a tax or “benefits” infringement. However, many crimes against individuals are now considered too trivial to require police action.

This government has even justified its use of confidential medical records against its critics.

No wonder there is a cult of Sousveillance.

WIBBIs:
– More informed open debate about facts and issues.
– Less public posturing and bluster which seek to confuse the issues.
– A less credulous media.
