We’re going to meet some really interesting people when we’re all sent to jail for refusing to register for ID cards. Obviously we all want to be locked up with Joanna Lumley, but it would also be very interesting to spend a few months behind bars with Dame Shirley Williams

“My view quite simply is that the ID card will undermine individual liberty so seriously that one’s entitled to say one won’t co-operate with it.

“I have not suggested I would use violence. I am suggesting I wouldn’t co-operate with it, nor will I.”

Is being locked up with undesirables and not seeing one’s loved ones for a few months a price worth paying for not going along with something you fundamentally disagree with? Well, a sense of solidarity with people like this could make the filthiest food half palatable.

For people who went to private boarding school, like Dame Shirely, jail is a doddle.
